THE CULTURE INDUSTRY AND THE CITY SEMINAR
Scott Lash
The Seminar addresses the culture industry in the context of knowledge and economy strategies of world cities --globally but especially in China and the West. Sessions will examine how cities like Shenzhen move up the value chain from export processing to Mainland Chinese owned, private knowledge intensive industries, and how this connects to Chinese investments in cities such as Lagos. What is the increasing importance of local state in the post crisis world, how the Chinese paradigm may be of more use to the West than the Washington consensus and neo-liberal market? What kind of urbanism will result from the new relational markets, and how the new capitalism will have a transformed role for the local state? And what knowledge-intensive urban strategies will come after the crisis of both the housing and finance bubbles?
